Dr Diehl joined Capital Orthopaedics in August
2007 after serving 15 years in the US Air Force.
A native of Colorado, he graduated with Honors
from University of Colorado Health Sciences
Center and completed an Internship in General
Surgery with the Air Force. He then went on to
Orthopaedic Residency training at University of
North Carolina, Chapel Hill, and a Sports
Medicine Fellowship at the University of Chicago.
At his most recent assignment Dr Diehl was the
Assistant Chief of Sports Medicine at the United
States Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs.
He was a team physician for NCAA Division I
‘Falcon’ Football, Basketball, Wrestling and
Lacrosse, as well as caring for athletes in all of
the other 18 inter-collegiate sports at the
Academy. He is board certified, an active
member of the American Orthopaedic Society for
Sports Medicine, the Society of Military
Orthopaedic Surgeons and a reviewer for The
American Journal of Sports Medicine. Dr Diehl’s
area of interest includes the operative and non-
operative treatment of sports injuries in
adolescent and intercollegiate athletes. He
continues to serve in the Air Force Reserve as a
flight surgeon with the 920th Rescue Wing,
Patrick AFB, FL. His wife Cynthia is also a
physician in the Raleigh area.
